Candidate nominations began nearly two years before the scheduled 2022 election.
The Ontario Liberal Party was first out of the gate, declaring a state of "electoral urgency" in July 2020 that has given leader Steven Del Duca sweeping powers to appoint candidates beyond what the party's constitution would otherwise allow. With only eight sitting MPPs, the Grits had a lot of seats to fill.
Meanwhile, the Progressive Conservatives kicked things off in September 2020 by renominating 70 MPPs. That bit of news kicked off some speculation that the Tories could call a snap election to take advantage of Premier Doug Ford's pandemic-era popularity — even though it was something the premier flatly denied.
The NDP nominations also opened that fall — months earlier than the last time around because "an unprecedented number of people" have expressed interest in running for the party, according to Executive Director Lucy Watson.
The Green Party was slower to fill its slate but scored a high-profile name early on — former Environmental Commissioner of Ontario Diane Saxe, who has also been named deputy leader.
