We are currently recruiting for an Advisor and Deputy Spokesperson to work with Communications & Public Affairs Division for this exciting opportunity.

Do you possess several years of experience in media relations, public relations and issues management? Do you possess superior writing, research, interview and communication skills as well as knowledge of Canadian press standards? Are you able to distill complex research into clear language? Are you able to demonstrate the ability to work through conflicting leadership opinions on positioning projects to a diplomatic resolution? If so, keep reading!

In this role, you will provide consistent, senior and strategic media relations support and counsel to senior leaders in the University, including department heads and senior officials. As the lead strategist on issues management and sensitive media requests, and with a strong understanding of how issues are likely to play out in the media, provides positioning advice and plans, designs and executes media relations programs to mitigate reputational risk. In addition, provides strategic positioning advice based on media requests and media opportunities. S/he represents the CS&DMR in management-level committees to ensure that University Executive Committee members remain well-briefed and are well-prepared for media interviews or events. The Advisor and Deputy Spokesperson works to enhance the reputation and public image of York University through strategic media relations, executes media relations strategies approved by the University executives, identifies media relations opportunities that are consistent with University priorities and proactively promotes research and other academic work being done at York.

To be considered for this opportunity, you will possess:

An Undergraduate degree in journalism, mass communication or other relevant area of study required and extensive experience in media relations, public relations, issues management and/or communications. In addition, the successful incumbent will possess a minimum of seven (7) years of related experience in media relations, public relations, issues management, at increasingly senior management levels.

Experience to include

  • Navigate crisis and issues management, institutional communications and experience leading project teams with strong management and leadership skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in a comparable public-sector institution operating within a unionized environment preferred
