Manager, Media and Public Affairs

Reporting to the Director, Communications and Public Affairs, the Manager, Media and Public Affairs provides comprehensive media and public affairs support and counsel to IIROC’s senior management team and its regulatory departments. The position is responsible for developing and implementing proactive and reactive media relations and stakeholder relations strategies, as well as managing media requests and issues . The Manager is the key communications contact for IIROC’s Enforcement, Complaints and Inquiries, Registration, Member Regulation, Market Regulation and Compliance departments, providing them with proactive communications advice and support, as well as reactive issues management to build and maintain confidence among external audiences and key stakeholders. The Manager recommends communications strategies and tactics to internal subject matter experts, for example in creating publications such as the annual Enforcement Report, as well as other communications tools and resources as part of IIROC’s external communications program .
Key Responsibilities: · Works closely with regulatory areas to identify proactive opportunities, develop and implement measureable media relations and stakeholder communications strategies · Proactively develops relationships with media and stakeholder organizations and leverages their communications channels to promote IIROC’s mandate and investor resources · Manages media inquiries, provides counsel and positioning statements to spokespersons to manage IIROC’s reputation and contentious issues · Assists with media training and conducts mock interviews with spokespersons · Alerts key staff about emerging issues and develops key messages and Q&As for use by spokespersons and for direct response to media inquiries when a spokesperson interview is not required or recommended · Prepares media analysis reports for Board of Directors meetings · Recommends communications strategies and provides communications support to internal regulatory departments (Registration, Enforcement, Member and Market Regulation, Policy and Compliance) in creating print and online reports, publications, investor brochures and notices and other resources, as part of ongoing outreach strategy · Manages one direct report responsible for timely media monitoring and maintenance of updated media and stakeholder lists as well as issue files Education/Experience: · University degree in communications, journalism, public relations or related field · 7 - 10 years of experience in a corporate communications or public relations setting · Demonstrated media relations and issues management experience · Experience in financial services or another regulated industry · Experience managing people and projects · Ability to work in both official languages and/or experience working in media would be an asset but not a requirement Key Competencies: · Ability to establish, build and maintain strong working relationships with media · Extensive experience interpreting and writing about complex and technical issues for diverse audiences in print and electronic media in a concise, compelling and accurate manner · Demonstrated ability to write media materials, such as news releases, fact sheets, op ed articles, etc. · Strong editing and proofreading skills with strong attention to detail · Ability to work proactively and independently while exercising strong judgment · Strong interpersonal, consultative and team skills and ability to develop strong relationships with internal subject matter experts, media and external stakeholders · Demonstrated project and people management expertise working in stressful environments with changing priorities, deadlines and limited resources While we appreciate receiving applications, only those applicants who closely meet the position requirements will be contacted.
