Canada's health ministers will flock to Toronto this week for their conference, where funding is the key issue to be debated. The provincial and territorial ministers will meet with their federal counterpart, Jane Philpott, on Tuesday, in what's bound to be a frank conversation. As noted by The Canadian Press, Premier Kathleen Wynne made the provinces' intentions more or less clear last week, telling reporters that "we recognize that there needs to be some base-funding increase." The age-old call for national pharmacare will resume as well. So this could get a bit bumpy, albeit most likely so behind closed doors, well away from the media's prying eyes. Which is no fun at all.
Is it writ-dropping time? The Liberals have nominated their candidate, Nathalie DesRosiers, for the upcoming byelection in Ottawa-Vanier. The Grits have also been fundraising like the byelection calls for the now-vacant Niagara West-Glanbrook and Ottawa-Vanier ridings could come any day now. Last, but not least, Premier Wynne is making a stop in Ottawa today. It's the perfect storm for a writ-drop.
Official on both sides of the Great Lakes are trying to crack down on illegal sturgeon poaching, the Toronto Star reports. Quoth the president of the Ontario Association of Crime Stoppers: "By weight, the value of caviar (from a sturgeon) can equal or exceed the equivalent weight in cocaine.” And it's not like the profits offered by cocaine have ever driven people to wrongdoing, right?
Speaking of (law and order issues, not cocaine), a newly released poll suggests that many Ontarians are disillusioned with the province's justice system, the Star reports.
The province is also set to toughen up its requirements for water-taking permits, The Canadian Press says.
