Headlines

The Scarborough-Rouge River byelection is finally here. What began with the surprise (and still sort of mysterious) resignation of veteran Liberal MPP Bas Balkissoon in March (on the same day Rob Ford died), will now finally come to a close. But not before we talk about sex-ed for one more day. As the Toronto Star notes, the byelection has become all about Progressive Conservative Leader Patrick Brown's sex-ed snafu. The Liberals, meanwhile, have been enjoying this nice vacation from scrutiny, and have been giving Mr. Brown the gears.

But back to the byelection, which is more about pride and momentum than anything else. After all, there's only one seat at stake, and the balance of power will remain more or less unchanged at Queen's Park (in Liberal hands). The polls show the Tories and candidate Raymond Cho with the advantage in the byelection, but not a big one, as the Liberals are either close behind or tied with the Progressive Conservatives. Also, who knows how all this sex-ed stuff is playing with voters in recent days? Time will tell, and QP Briefing will be out at all three campaign headquarters this evening covering the vote.

Ontario's Grade 6 students are also having a heckuva time with standardized math testing, according to the latest numbers.

In the opinion pages:

  • Martin Regg Cohn dives into Patrick Brown's sex-ed mistake
  • Steve Paikin wonders if we should give Brown a pass for the misstep
  • Michael Coren has a few theories on what happened with Brown's sex-ed letter, including rogue social conservatives in the Tory camp
  • Susan Delacourt sees Ontario political parties shunning their traditional supporters (this is also about the sex-ed letter)
